Buckeye’s growth numbers get thrown around a lot — and they’re real, which raises a fair question from anyone relocating: what does living in a city growing this fast actually feel like day to day? Here’s a straight answer.
Getting around
Buckeye has grown roughly 37% since 2020 to around 125,400 residents, one of the largest numeric population gains in Arizona — and the commute reflects that growth. I-10 runs through the city, but the average commute to downtown Phoenix runs 40–55 minutes, longer than closer-in West Valley cities, and freeway traffic has increased noticeably as the area has filled in — more than 140,000 vehicles a day now travel through Buckeye on I-10. Worth weighing seriously if your job isn’t already on the west side.
Shopping, dining, and everyday errands
Buckeye has built out real retail as it’s grown: Sundance Town Center, Sundance Crossing, and Buckeye Commons cover most everyday shopping and dining needs, with the Verrado Marketplace (within Buckeye’s own city limits) adding more. It’s a newer commercial base than some other West Valley cities, built alongside the residential growth rather than inherited from an older town center.
Schools
Buckeye Union High School District #201 serves the area with three comprehensive high schools and one alternative school, roughly 3,700 students total. As with any fast-growing area, new schools and boundary adjustments are more likely here than in a more established city — confirm the current assignment for a specific address rather than assuming it will stay fixed.
Medical access
Buckeye itself doesn’t yet have a major hospital within city limits as of this writing — the nearest significant facilities, including Abrazo West Campus (a Level 1 trauma center), are in neighboring Goodyear, generally a 20-30 minute drive depending on which part of Buckeye you’re in. Worth factoring into any decision if proximity to a hospital matters to you.
Police and fire coverage
Buckeye runs its own police and fire departments. Police non-emergency: 623-349-5050. Fire-Medical-Rescue non-emergency: 623-349-6700, operating from six stations with more than 100 department members, including a community paramedicine program for residents managing chronic illness or recovering from a hospital stay. 911 covers emergencies as usual.
Recreation
Skyline Regional Park is the standout — an 8,700-acre mountain preserve in the southern White Tank Mountains with 20 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, free entry, open sunrise to sunset. Golf is also well represented within Buckeye’s city limits, including courses at Verrado and The Wigwam.
